PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS (abbreviated as "PUBG") is a 100-player battle royale game developed and published by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of South Korean video game company Bluehole. It was was released on Steam's Early Access platform for Microsoft Windows on March 23, 2017, with its full release leaving Early Access on December 20, 2017. The game is a direct competitor to Fortnite Battle Royale, the game mode used in Fortnite esports.

PUBG is based on mods that were created by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene for other games in the past, taking inspiration from the 2000 Japanese dystopian thriller film "Battle Royale". He expanded the gameplay into a stand-alone game. Up to 100 players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to eliminate the others players while avoiding bring eliminated themselves. The playable map area decreases in size over time, forcing the remaining players into more confined areas of the map to force engagements. The last player or team standing is the winner.

PUBG Corporation revealed a five-year plan for PUBG esports during the 2018 PUBG Global Invitational, which includes supporting players and teams financially though revenue-sharing initiatives such as prize pools, merchandise, and in-game digital content.
